Bourgogne - Nevers, France

Starting my search for the perfect town to buy a holiday home is exciting and terrifying. I flew into Paris on a Sunday morning and took a two and a half hour train ride south to Nevers, located in the Bourgogne region, or as we call Burgundy. The train ride was painless and the scenery pleasant. It seemed to go fast.

My Airbnb apartment was close to the train station and walk able, it was a very cute two story walk up with one bedroom. Definitely an apartment I could see myself living in. The street that I was on was very cute and had a Boulangerie across the street. I quickly went to the super marche before it closed as it was Sunday and bought all of the fixings for a cheese board.

I went back to my apartment and tried to stay awake as long as possible, but failed miserably and was asleep by seven in the evening. The next day I set off to explore Nevers. The list of sights to see included: Bernadette Soubirous which is an old convent that houses the body of Saint Bernadette, Parc Roger Salengro, Porte du Croux, Promenade des Remparts, Goguin Tower, Eglise Saint-Pierre, Chapelle Sainte-Marie, Palais ducal de Nevers and Nevers Cathedral. All of this took a couple of hours and was around three miles which was good for a town size as I don’t want it to be too big. Nevers has a population of around thirty five thousand.

After touring I went to my apartment for lunch, being Monday not many places are open. I waited for some restaruants to open for diner and went to Le Florentine for pizza. The staff was nice, the ambiance was great and the pizza was divine. A large group came in and two of the gentlemen greeted me and one told me bon apetit.

It was a beautiful day, sunny and around sixty. The people here seem friendly and approachable. There are some places that look a little run down or are under construction but for the most part it’s very cute.

I didn’t sleep well and couldn’t bring myself to get out and about until lunch time, but it was Tuesday so I lot of things were open. I got ready and went to Le Mange’oir for lunch. I had a mushroom omelet and a cafe au lait. It was very good and I enjoyed the ambiance there.

After lunch I found Mango and did a little shopping. It seems this area is half young/half old in shops. Meaning, there were several shops I popped into that seemed like they were for older women, like in their eighties. There were some shops for younger women but not many. I got tired from shopping so I stopped by La Pause for a cafe break. I sat outside by the fountain which was quite nice.

I continued to meander when it started to rain. I stopped into a little cafe and had another coffee and a treat while waiting for the rain to pass. I found the Ancien Relais de Poste, it was a timber home built in the nineteen hundreds and is located in Saint Sebastian Square.

I went home this evening to eat all of my leftovers before venturing off to the next ville. I noticed today in Nevers that it seems the population is older. The clothing stores, some of them seemed a bit outdated. I like this town. But I don’t think it’s the one.  I was looking forward to moving onto Chalon-sur-Saone and Auxerre.
